The body of work below has been show in two iterations. The first as a response piece in a collaboration entitled Excuse Me and the second in a solo exhibition entitled Fo(u)r Hours. Excuse Me: a Structural Device for Visual Communication is a collaborative exhibition from Danger Punch and FO(u)RT art collectives. Each week will showcase the work of an individual artist in response to a single poem by Dr. Jenna Goldsmith. This series of rapid exhibitions will highlight the similarities and differences of written word and visual art, informing each other while also pushing against each other.

Poem #3 by Jenna Goldsmith utilizes institutional critique to question the application of rules/laws/codes when they are enforced in a manner inconsistent with the spirit of their intent.

This body of work is a visual reaction, overlaying handheld phone cam videos taken at the January 6th attacks and converting them into a single compressed image. The technical process operates similarly to a long exposure film image while the result is referential of impressionist painting. The intent is to create a singular “beautiful” image referencing impressionist, art historical imagery, while serving as a “record” of distorted photography. The final display of these images are 60”x40” archival prints that hang loose like a banner or flag. The visual language of the material is referential to nationalistic fervor and the use of signaling to build identity. In total there are 20 large format prints.
